On the morning after their arrival, the gang discover the difficulties in getting a normal breakfast, especially when Mrs. Slocombe gets stuck in the hen house, looking for eggs, and Mr. Moulterd has to help her out. He also discovers that he and Mrs. Slocombe met when she was evacuated during World War II. As Mr. Humphries is late for breakfast and Mrs. Slocombe discovers that Mavis has slept in his bed during the night, talk begins among the others. Therefore, he goes into town for a "manly walk" and to buy "manly" accessories. Upon his return, they all decide how to run the hotel. The first thing to do will be for Captain Peacock and Mrs. Slocombe to ride a horse cart into town, to go shopping. However, as they do so, they spot another horse cart, unattended, in the middle of the road. Mrs. Slocombe takes it upon her to remove it, but as she does so, the horse bolts off, with Captain Peacock chasing after her with their cart, leaving the owner of the other cart stranded by the road. When they both return to the manor, it turns out Mrs. Slocombe was taken by the police for speeding and stealing the other cart and the case is supposed to go before the magistrate the next day. Finally, they also discover that any check for the pension fund they want to cash in must be signed by Miss Lovelock. Edit
